I'm getting the distinct impression you might be more of a cedar man! There's no denying the draw of a good cedar top and these 60DT models do it so well. Perhaps it's the extra layer of cedar that lines the inside of the back?

Both Antonio Picado and Amalio Burguet are excellent guitar makers. We used to deal with a lot of Amalio Burguet guitars; all models have a lovely tone which only improves as you progress through their range from 2M at the bottom through to the higher ‘1 Series’ range. Whilst I am fond of the tone of the Burguet guitars, I’ve found the Antonio Picado guitars to offer that little bit more in terms of clarity, projection and their overall singing quality. One of the qualities I like in a guitar is the ability to separate voices. The Picado Model 53 excels at this compared to the Burguet 2M. There is also more definition in the mid range which helps to provide that separation of voice. The 2M can feel a little soft and underpowered when side by side with the Model 53. It’s probably not something you’d notice on its own, but you do miss it when you hear the difference side by side. Whist volume isn’t everything, I think it’s one of the key considerations in a studio grade guitar, as the guitarist is generally still in the process of refining their dynamic playing and pushing this boundary. Having a guitar with a larger range offers more potential for exploration (and learning). The fact that the Model 53 comes in at around £100-200 cheaper is just a bonus. It shows you don’t always have to spend at the top end of your budget to get the best guitar. As much as I like the Amalio Burguet 2M guitars and enjoy playing them, if I were choosing for myself I’d go with an Antonio Picado Model 53.

Thanks for your comment. I don’t believe Hanika are trying to create a ‘replica’ Torres model here, but a guitar that is ‘inspired by’ Torres. Countless luthiers take the same approach (José Romanillos included, when he was alive), using the guitars made by Torres as inspiration, before adapting their instrument with their own ideas. In fact, this guitar is quite different when compared with an original Torres in many ways. The cedar top, unique headstock, inverted bridge design, body size, rosette design etc. If you’re looking for a Torres replica, I can recommend taking a look at some of the Wolfgang Jellinghaus Torres style guitars. These stick a little closer to some of the original Torres plans, but even these have their differences… I hope this helps to clear up any confusion you might have regarding Hanika’s ‘Natural Torres’ model guitar. If you have any complaints about the design, I’d suggest taking it up with Hanika (who actually make this guitar) as we have no say in the design of their stock models.

Thanks for your comment! Agreed, there are better Ramirez guitars than the 1NE, but then you must also factor in the price. All of the 1A variants are significantly more expensive (even secondhand these are generally between 4-8 times more expensive). The 1NE is an excellent studio guitar and does not attempt to masquerade as a concert level guitar. I’ve found plenty to enjoy with this guitar and I can see how it will help an intermediate guitarist to grow into a better musician.

The tone is absolutley sublime and the guitar is a lot of fun to play. The SE43 S has a very comfortable neck which makes playing a real joy. This allows the focus to remain on the music rather than any technical challenges.

The spruce version is incredibly sweet. I think the treble string tone of these Antonio Picado guitars is really something special.

These are the stock tuners provided by Antonio Picado. I've not changed them out for any others, as the stock tuners do an excellent job; stable, reliable with smooth tuning action.

The strings are the stock strings from Wolfgang Jellinghaus, which are listed as Savarez 500. They feel like medium tension so I would assume they are the 500AR set. It's a beautiful guitar with a remarkable sound. I think a lot of classical guitarists are rediscovering the beauty of the Torres style of making, despite having many other options available (bigger bodies, longer scales, lattice, doubletop etc). This guitar has an awful lot to offer and is very modestly priced given the outstanding quality of the instrument.

Hi John, apologies if the choice of repertoire didn’t demonstrate everything you were hoping for. I’ll bear this in mind for future demonstrations. I was quite enjoying that particular piece of music and thought the Model 60DT did an admirable job of bringing out each voice, hence choosing to record it for this guitar. I’m pleased to report that notes beyond the 7th position are just as sweet, and that sustain in the higher registers is one of this guitars strengths compared to other similarly priced instruments. @geoff3725 thank you for suggestion. Btw, there is an error in the first description line '62 DT'. My question was not an accidental one. Many internet sources mention 'double back' in AP 60 DT construction (something similar to Contreras guitars - second back (doble tapa)) ... from a guitar dealer webpage: 'Antonio Picado model 60 DT has a sound closer to concert guitars than instruments intended for high school music students. This guitar has a so-called Spanish double-top which means it has two front plates. Another front panel is positioned directly next to the back panel. It is a specific Spanish construction that contributes to a much better projectivity of the instrument in larger spaces. The 60DT is the best-selling model from the Picado workshop.' (translated by google from a different language)

Thanks for your comment. Doubletops are indeed confusing! This is the Spanish ‘doubletop’ similar to that made famous by Contreras. The back is 1.9mm Indian rosewood with 1.2mm Canadian cedar on the inside. Picado have also built guitars with the Dammann style doubletop (two thin soundboards with nomex in the centre), but this is not one of their standard models and production of this type of doubletop are at a standstill (according to the maker, Ángel Genis). The models we currently have in stock are the Contreras style ‘doubletops’ (or “doble tapa”). I hope this helps to clear things up. When we order these guitars they are simply advertised as ‘doubletop’ hence we use the same model description in our descriptions for consistency with Picado, so I can understand where the confusion comes in. I hope this clears things up. 'Doubletop' in English does suggest two soundboards so a very easy misunderstanding to make… Welcome to the wacky world of guitar construction!

@@Chibzic the tone of all spruce tops matures with age. This guitar will mellow a lot in the next couple of years, then more gradually after that. I've not found spruce tops to improve greatly in volume as they age, however everybody's ears hear things differently so perhaps you may notice this?
